THE ONLY THING SHOCKING...

You know, the only thing that’s really shocking is that folk are STILL shocked by this:

“Wells Fargo & Co Chief Executive Charles Scharf exasperated some Black employees in a Zoom meeting this summer when he reiterated that the bank had trouble

reaching diversity goals because there was not enough qualified minority talent, two participants told Reuters.“

Let’s break down this one wittle statement:

1. There’s a diversity goal - which is usually the base for acceptability - and they couldn’t even reach that!

2. In practice, honest white folk like the creator of the comic, Dilbert, talk about how when he messed up in banking, they kept giving him a promotion!

Or that tap they got on the shoulder where the manager said, ‘I see something in you!’

Black people don’t get that. And the few times that we do, the expectation is that we conform to the denial all around us. ‘Yes boss...race relations sure is improving!’

3. If the pool of Black talent is so small, then that would mean that we’re all snatched up. High demand/small supply. But clearly that’s not the case.

4. Their trying to deny the isms is ridiculous! How many people have we trained to be our boss over the years?

How many times do we have to hear stories of Black folk changing their ethnicity in a resume and having the phone ring off the hook?

Or how diverse an orchestra becomes when the ones auditioning are behind a screen?

Or changed the rules on us by happenstance but always to our detriment?

Or accused us of cheating, even making us retake exams because there’s no way we could’ve scored that high!

Or questioned our methods when our sales or customer service topped their list?

Or the arbitrary excuses made for us not being promoted.

5. So when I say ‘their denial’, I’m not talking about this daft CEO but the white folk on our pages

pretending to be aghast at his statement while secretly relishing their ‘50% more likely’ status.

6. When I talk about my misogynoir conditioning amongst the brothers 1 on 1, I’ll at least get a ‘Yeah...you right.’

Not so with white folk. They not only have drunk the Kool-aid but are swimming in it.

7. They have yet to see that these soundbite narratives that they reiterate, which seem innocent to them are poison!

8. They have yet to come to grips that deep down, Black excellence scares them and white savagery does not.

9. They will not apologize for specifics because the only standard that they adhere to is themselves.

10. They pretend that the scariest thing is 45 being re-elected, but by their lack of saying REPARATIONS NOW

and fire ALL of the white cops from elsewheres patrolling and brutalizing Black spaces, we know that an equitable playing field is their real nightmare.

White people, boy!

When white folk dump, we can’t get Angry about it

I got angry over a white (almost white) person saying that I’m overreacting. Immediately afterwards, I berated myself, thinking that I should’ve held my cool. But just as we laud those black heroes who articulate the pain rather than express it, we condemn ourselves for feeling what is normal to feel.  Part of colonization says that I have no right to be angry and that my anger is naturally perceived as a threat so it’s in my best interest to hold my tongue. This is not normal. We must break the economic, physical, emotional and spiritual consequences to be true human beings. Otherwise we’re just lying to ourselves. “How dare they get angry over our oppression of them!”

Rigged Legal System

Search words: Rigged Legal System, Gauntlet of oppression, racial profiling throughout  Years ago on jury duty, I was asked to render a ‘fair and impartial’ judgement regarding a young Black man accused of possession on the Upper East Side. There were only two Black people on the jury, myself and another dude. After a very long time, we ended up finding the defendant guilty. That’s the end of the story but not the narrative. The twelve main things I came to realize: 1. Several Black potential jurors were citing a mantra about their unwillingness to participate in a prejudiced judicial system. It was my first time hearing it but should I be called again, I’ll google it and voice my objection in the same way. 2. The suspect was stopped for a broken taillight, but as his wife said when she examined their car at the station, the light was never broken. 3. The white judge, however, ruled that the bust was still legit even though he was clearly stopped for drivin...

ON REPARATIONS

Never banter with white folk about reparations. It’s like arguing with your boss about wages they haven’t paid you. The only acceptable answer, whether they can give it or not, is “Yeah… You right!” Anything less from them is pure toxicity.
