LOOKING BACK ON THE ‘THIS IS US’ 4 PART NETFLIX SERIES
It’s good to look back on this series and event that shaped the world. For me I saw the mistakes I made in just believing their ‘confessions’,
never imagining that cops would torture and then spoon feed them the details to sign.
Saw how from the juries point of view, when the prosecutor said that the ‘evidence’ of the victim’s hairs were found on the teen’s clothing (she lied)
and defense didn’t refute that lie, they had no choice but to convict.
Then I remembered the divide that the parents made that the CHILDREN did not.
One was Hispanic (who later got involved in dealing), the older, Korey, had unaddressed reading challenges
and Yusef from a Muslim family was the only one who didn’t succumb by confessing to the cops’ lies under torture.
The CHILDREN quickly realized how they were duped into tell lies about the other with the promise of saving their own skin and apologized,
recognizing the damage of the torture done to them by the real enemy.
Yusef even though pointed out to everyone how Korey got caught up in this because he didn’t want him to face this alone.
So the kids made their peace with one another; the parents took a leetle bit longer.
One of the most heartrending scenes to me was when the dad, played by Leguizamo, said “I blame myself because I told my son to head to the park because bad things happen on the corner!”
What I did not know is that Korey, the oldest of the teens had a transgender sister who was killed while he was in prison.
I also didn’t know the particulars about how the actual rapist raped 1 person in the park 2 days before this happened and 4 others in the 3 months following
for a total of 6 (with 1 being murdered) and the cops buried the connections.
One thing for sure; the name THIS IS US is apropos.
